The collection relates to political aspects of Islam in the Middle East and elsewhere. It contains printouts of electronic bulletins and websites, serial issues, pamphlets, other printed matter, sound recordings, and video tapes. The materials are primarily in Arabic and Persian.
The collection started with a three-year project, August 1995 to August 1998, to document Islamic fundamentalism around the world. The bulk of the material in boxes 1-19 represents collecting that occurred in the field and over the Internet during this period. Although this specific project formally ended in August 1998, collecting is ongoing and the collection continues to grow.
