Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains materials relating to the career of UCSB Economics professor and administrator Alec P. Alexander, who served as Chair of the Department of Economics (1965-1970), Dean of the College of Letters and Science (1971-1973), Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (1973-1978), and Acting Chancellor (July-Dec. 1977).

The bulk of the collection consists of copies of letters and memos grouped into stages of Alexander's career, each with a handwritten introduction or overview. Most items relate to Alexander's tenure as an administrator during the period when Vernon Cheadle was Chancellor at UCSB. Also included is material relating to the selection and tenure of Robert Huttenback, Cheadle's successor as Chancellor. Alexander resigned as Vice Chancellor shortly after Huttenback's arrival, citing differences in management style. The final item is a tribute to Vernon Cheadle, given on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of UCSB in 1994.

Further biographical information on Alec P. Alexander may be found in the UCSB University Archives, Public Information Office, Biographical Files.
