Background

Scope and content:

The Doug Russell Collection of Ambassador Recitals consists of recordings from a series of 41 concerts at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California, selected from the series produced by the Ambassador Foundation. The tapes were produced by radio station KUSC in Los Angeles and edited for broadcast over the Public Radio International network as "In Recital at Ambassador," a program hosted by Beverly Sills. The performances were taped during the 1991-2, 1992-3, and 1994-5 seasons, and were broadcast from 1993 to 1995. Additionally, broadcast tapes of the 1993 Ivo Pogorelich International Solo Piano Competition Awards and unedited tapes of recitals by Jean-Bernard Pommier and Yevginy Mogilevsky were included with the donation. The 63 tapes contain performances of largely classical music, with some jazz and popular music. Performing artists include the Tallis Scholars, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Dave Brubeck, the Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, James Galway, the Juilliard String Quartet, the King's Singers, and George Shearing. All tapes are broadcast-ready programs and contain splices between narration, selection, and station breaks. A comprehensive listing of the collection contents, including all works performed, is available.

Biographical / historical:

The Doug Russell Collection is named for B. Douglas Russell, director of marketing, publicity and promotion at the Ambassador Auditorium from 1990 to 1995, and acting director of Ambassador Performing Arts as the concert series unexpectedly concluded (the last concert occurred in May 1995).
