Description
Placed on permanent deposit in The Bancroft Library by the U.S. District Court, San Francisco. Maps show land grants (ranchos) in California presented in evidence to the District Court. Dockets from which these maps were removed are in The Bancroft Library Manuscript Division.
Background
The maps, or diseños, that comprise the Land Case Maps collection originally formed part of the private land claims ajudicated by the U.S. District Courts of California (Northern and Southern Districts) and the U.S Ciruit Court (9th Ciruit) from ca. 1850 to 1860. The records of the private land claim cases, along with the maps, were held by the U.S. District Court, San Francisco until 1951 when they were transferred to The Bancroft Library.
