Scope and content:

This collection contains approximately 140 posters by Juan R. Fuentes that cover a wide variety of worldwide and local political and cultural events from 1973 to 2010. Also included are flyers and announcements for Fuentes' exhibitions and related events.

Biographical / historical:

Juan Renteria Fuentes (1950- ) was born in Artesia, New Mexico and raised in farm labor camps in Las Lomas, California. Fuentes grew up working in the fields with his parents and siblings and attending school in nearby Watsonville, California. Upon graduation from Watsonville High in 1969, he was recruited by the Educational Opportunity Program to attend San Francisco State University (SFSU).

Arriving at SFSU at the tail end of the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF) strike, amidst Vietnam War campus protests, and alongside Blank Panthers and United Farm Workers' union members, Fuentes studied art under Ralph Putzker, Rupert Garcia, and Malaquias Montoya. Inspired by his mentors and the social activism happening around him, Fuentes picked up poster-making in an effort to connect communities and movements. Over the next fifty years, Fuentes devoted his work to the advancement of community issues and social justice in addition to exploring the human condition. He utilizes numerous styles and techniques in his works, including linocut, silkscreen, lithography, and offset prints. Most known for his posters and prints, Fuentes also creates mixed media art pieces, pastel drawings, and tiled murals.

In addition to working as an exhibiting artist, Fuentes has taught art at City College San Francisco's Mission Campus, at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, in San Francisco County jails, and was a visiting faculty member in the San Francisco Art Institute's print department. In the 1990s, Fuentes also served as the director of Mission Grafica at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA).

After serving ten years as the Executive Director of MCCLA, Fuentes founded the printmaking studio Pajaro Editions in 2007 as a part of Consejo Grafico Nacional, a collective of Chicano/Latino print studios. He continues to mentor emerging artists as a founding member and curatorial advisor for Art 94124 Gallery, and through community workshops with local youth and adults.
