Scope and content:

Record Series 619 contains the administrative files of the Department of Dance at the University of California, Los Angeles. File include event, UCLA Dance Company, student, and administrative materials. Event files include publicity materials and production notes. UCLA Dance Company materials document events and organization through production notes, publicity materials, and tour information. Student work is composed of reports generated in the 1990 Dance 240C course. Administrative materials relate to departmental operations, construction and renovations; and personnel.

This is an inactive record series; no additional University records are expected to be added.

Biographical / historical:

Dance at the University of California, Los Angeles began within the physical education department. Dance classes were offered as part of the physical education major and for general college students. A separate dance major was established in 1957. In 1962 the Department of Dance was established in the College of Fine Arts and a graduate program was established, offering a Master's degree in Dance. Founding Chair Alma H. Hawkins helped to develop the department into a model for other dance programs and departments around America and in Europe.
