Scope and content:

The collection contains an estimated 50,000 wine labels. Included are extensive labels from Europe (France, Italy, and Spain) as well as from the United States. They are arranged in binders by country and region. The labels range in date from circa 1928-2007.

The collection is arranged in three series: 1. Europe, 2. United States, 3. Special.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Juan Fried (born Janos Fried) (1924-2007) was a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who went to Venezuela before coming to the United States. He was a doctor of internal medicine for the Veterans Administration in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fried began the wine label collection in retirement circa 1990. Because of his ability in languages (English, Italian, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Czech, and German), he was able to correspond with many European wineries.
