Background

Scope and content:

The records consist of administrative materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, posters, and audiovisual materials created and/or collected by the Ujamaa theme dormitory at Stanford University. These materials document the administration and history of the theme house from the 1970s to 2012.

Biographical / historical:

In 1970, Stanford, upon the insistence of the Black Student Union, established Cedro as a dorm that would have a "concentration" of Black freshmen. Dr. William and Pat Dement were the inaugural Resident Fellows. A parallel concept was also created in Junipero for Black upperclassmen with Dr. Warren and Jackie Hayman, as Resident Fellows. This concept later moved to Roble, blending freshmen and upperclassmen. As enrollment of Black students increased, the BSU and others felt it was time to move from concept to vision...an entire dorm for us, by us, and about us. In 1974 students moved into Olivio Magnolia House where Black students made up 50% of the dorm population. Along with numbers, the academic focus of the house was the African Diaspora. In 1976, the house was renamed Ujamaa and set on a path to become a model dorm in Residential Education.
