Note:
John L. Cooper was born in Gettysburg, PA and sailed for California in 1849. He opened a store in San Francisco the same year,
then moved to Santa Cruz and established a mercantile establishment with his brother William in 1850. In October of 1852 Cooper
sailed to New York to marry Alice Maria Paxton of Chambersburg, PA. After the marriage the couple set sail back to California.
In 1866 the Cooper Brothers donated land for the first county courthouse in Santa Cruz, and in 1876 William Cooper was elected
first mayor of Santa Cruz.
