Note:
William W. Light was born in Claremont County, Ohio on July 29, 1819, and was a boyhood friend of Ulysses S. Grant. He began
studying medicine at age eighteen in Cincinnati, entered the practice of dentistry in 1840, and arrived in California on August
30, 1849. Light worked briefly at Ormsby's mint in Sacramento, then tried his hand at mining, after which he returned to practicing
dentistry. During the 1860s Light acquired mining interests in Sonora, Mexico and settled there, during which time he became
embroiled in a battle with local desperados. Returning to Sacramento, Light resumed his dental practice and passed away on
June 14, 1895.
