Biographical / historical:

In 1996 the Presidio Trust Act created the Presidio Trust, which is a wholly owned federal government corporation. The purposes of the Trust are to preserve and enhance the Presidio as a national park and to ensure that the Presidio becomes financially self-sufficient by 2013 (i.e., generate sufficient revenue without any federal appropriation to fund long-term operating and maintenance costs). The U.S. Army occupied the Presidio for 148 years before closing its post in 1994. As part of an environmental cleanup agreement the U.S. Army will supply the Trust with $100 million dollars to provide for fast-track restoration of areas impacted by the military's use of the site. In accordance with this agreement, in August 1999 the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) collection at East Fort Baker was transferred to the Trust and has been renamed the Presidio Trust Environmental Remediation Collection. This collection will continue to grow as remediation projects are completed.
