Summary: This photograph album was compiled by an unknown member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Stanford University; the images are cyanotypes and date between circa 1895 and 1902. Subjects include the Beta Theta Pi house and members, with several images of the fraternity's cook and dog; athletic games and events, including some women's games; images of the Quad; students and student groups on campus; and student excursions off campus. The collection also includes nine photographs taken by Samuel T. Halsted of the construction of the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery, ca. 1917; and a 6-page letter (carbon copy, unsigned) written by an 1898 Stanford graduate and Beta Theta Pi brother telling of his experiences as an engineer in Alaska, Canada, and New York, 1902.

Biographical/Historical Sketch

Samuel T. Halsted earned his A.B. at Stanford in civil engineering, 1917. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and this album ended up in his care.
