Southern California Pegmatite: Several mines once were in operation in the San Jacinto district north of the Riverside-San Diego county line, which gave a valuable output from gem pockets for several years. The one that was most prominent is Fano Mine, discovered and located in 1902 by Bert Simmons, but now owned by E. A. Fano of San Diego and formally known as the Fano-Kunzite Tourmaline Mining Company, on the north side of Cahuilla (also on maps as Coahuila) Mountain, at an altitude of some 4,500 feet, about a mile south of Bautista Creek, 4 miles west of the Ramona Indian Reservation and 3 miles north of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. The mine consisted of 4 claims. The nearest post office is Hemet. The pegmatite is finely crystallized, and resembles that of other tourmaline and kunzite mines in San Diego County.: Fig. 1 Map of California Localities (a guide to map fragments in this envelope) hand drawn 22 x 15 cm, from San Jacinto and Hemet in the north, including the Fano mine, to the Mexican border and showing areas of igneous gabbro.
