Biography/Organization History
The
Sierra
Club
was founded in 1892 by John Muir in San Francisco, California. The Southwest Office includes the Utah Chapter, the Rocky
Mountain Chapter (Colorado), the Rio Grande Chapter (New Mexico), and the Grand Canyon Chapter (Arizona). The Southwest Regional
Office is located in Phoenix, Arizona, with additional offices in Boulder, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Scope and Content Note
The
Sierra
Club
Southwest Office Records (1900-2000, bulk 1966-1996) document the conservation, research, and political activities of the
Southwest Office and its individual
Sierra
Club
chapters. The records include correspondence, reports, clippings, publications, and notes. Major topics of interest include
air quality, energy and power, mining, water, and wilderness. The bulk of the collection pertains to issues at the state
level in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah (Series 1-4). Series 5, Subject Files, includes a small amount of materials
on Alaska, California, Nevada, Texas, and Wyoming, but focuses mainly on issues that transcend state lines or that are approached
on a larger scale. Series 6, Organizational Documents, contains materials related to
Sierra
Club
committees, campaigns, and projects.
Original folder titles are retained throughout, including the organization's use of "Indian" to refer to Native Americans.
From the collection but cataloged separately are a cassette tape labeled "Restoring the Earth, 1/88, U.C. Berkeley, Future
of the Environmental Movement: J. Bass w/ D. Brower, M. Fischer, D. Foreman, T. Graff, & T. Look" (Phonotape 2954 C) and 13
film reels (Motion Picture 834). Film reel labels include "California Air Resources Board: To Clear the Air," "Redwoods,"
"Rio Rancho Promotion Film (1968?)," "Quiet Calkin," and "Look What We've Done to This Land (Blue Sky Copy)." Remaining reels
are unlabeled.
