[Identification of Item], Robert Himovitz oral history, OH 142, Department of Special Research Collections, UC Santa Barbara
Library, University of California, Santa Barbara.
Born in Los Angeles, California in 1946, Roger Himovitz grew up in Hanford, California. While an undergraduate at the University
of Alabama in 1965, Himovitz participated in civil rights activities, including voter registration work for CORE. He was a
participant in the Bloody Sunday march (March 7, 1965) and was arrested on that day, along with many others. Himovitz would
go on to graduate from UC Berkeley. Intending to study law, he volunteered to serve in Vietnam instead, as an engineer with
the Navy Seabees, as well as with the "Protein Project." Returning to California after his year of service, Himovitz entered
the family business in construction, eventually settling in Santa Barbara.
This collection consists of the pre-interview notes and transcript of the interview by Zachary Liebhaber with narrator Roger
Himovitz at the Himovitz residence in Montecito, California on September 27, 2018. The interview centers on Himovitz's experiences
as a participant in the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 while an undergraduate at the University of Alabama, as well as
Himovitz's meeting with Robert Shelton, Grand Imperial Wizard of the United Klans of America (UKA), that same year.
