It appears the sheet music was sent to Judd Stewart by Clark Prescott Bissett in 1914.
Composer Edward Cox Davis (1818-1911) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was married to Jane Clark Skinner and Diana S.
Hitchcock; he had three children. Davis died in Des Moines, Iowa. His composition "Lincoln's Funeral March" was performed
by the Old Silver Band of St. Louis at the 1865 funeral services of President Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois.
Collection contains materials related to composer Edward Cox Davis and his composition "Lincoln's Funeral March," including
correspondence; a manuscript of the composition, probably 1909; a published sheet music copy, after 1888; and an image of
Davis. Correspondence consists of two letters from Lincoln scholar and collector Clark Prescott Bissett (1875-1932) to fellow
Lincoln scholar and collector Judd Stewart (1867-1919), 1914 May 9 and 1914 May 18; the May 18 letter has enclosure of Edward
Cox Davis letter to Mrs. O.G. Stephenson, 1909 March 12, which provides some background on the funeral march and on Davis's
career.
