George Hyde was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 22nd 1819. He received an education at Emmetsburg, Maryland, and
later returned to Philadelphia to work. When he learned that California was soon to be part of the United States, he obtained
the position of clerk of Comodore Stockton who was ordered to the Pacific. Hyde arrived to San Francisco August 10th, 1846,
and was honorably discharged from the Navy. Shortly after, Lieut. W. A. Bartlett of the Navy was captured by native Californians,
and Hyde was appointed to perform the duties of the office for forty days until Bartlett was released. Hyde officially retired
from the office of Alcalde in 1848, and his wife and children joined him in California in 1850. He lived his life peacefully
and quietly. He passed away August 11th, 1890.
