Biography

Bill Barich was born in Winona, Minnesota, on August 23, 1943 to Russell and Lois Barich. In 1950, Barich moved with his family to Westbury, New York. Barich graduated from Colgate University in 1965 and in February 1966 he joined the Peace Corps as a teacher in Eastern Nigeria (later Biafra). Upon his return he was hired to teach seventh grade in a boarding school in New Jersey. By 1969, Barich left New Jersey and moved to San Francisco.
Barich is the author of: Laughing in the Hills (1980), Traveling Light (1984), Hard to Be Good (1987), Big Dreams: Into the Heart of California (1994), Carson Valley (1997), Crazy for Rivers (1999), and Long Way Home: On the Trail of Steinbeck’s America (2010), and numerous articles.

Scope and Content

The collection contains Barich's writing journals, manuscripts and published versions of his writings, promotional materials about his works, as well as literary and editorial correspondence. The correspondence series also contains letters that Barich wrote to his family while he spent a semester in Italy and served in the Peace Corps in Eastern Nigeria (later Biafra).
