Purchased from Hammill and Barker, February 1976.
Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) was born in Calais and studied art in Antwerp, Paris and Rome
before settling in England in 1846. While in England he became a friend of the
Pre-Raphaelites, even briefly taking on Dante Gabriel Rossetti as a pupil, although he was
never a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Brown was a founding member of the William
Morris Company, for which he worked as a book illustrator and a designer of stained glass
and furniture.
A collection of letters related to Ford Madox Brown; the majority of which are addressed to
Brown or his wife, Emma Hill Brown. Although the correspondence spans a twenty-two year
period, the vast majority of the letters were written within November and December of 1874.
The Brown's only son, Oliver Madox Brown, died in 1874 at the age of nineteen, and the
majority of the correspondence relates to his passing and the family's grief over his loss.
Correspondents include George Price Boyce, Moncure Daniel Conway, Thomas Gordon Hake,
William John Hennessy, Alfred J. Hipkins, Philip Bourke Marston, Christina Georgina
Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Lucy Madox Brown Rossetti, Frederic Shields and Frederic
George Stephens.
