Abstract: This collection consists of written, visual, and audio materials collected by Jim Goggin during the course of his research for his books. He authored many jazz articles and published books about West Coast jazz music and its performers from Bob Mielke to Turk Murphy. He also co-founded the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation, which dedicated itself to the preservation of thousands of items related to the West Coast Jazz Revival that began in San Francisco around 1939. Included in this collection are materials used for the following books: Turk Murphy, Just for the Record; Meet me at McGoon's; The Dude Martin Band Story; Some Jazz Friends volumes 1 and 2; Bob Mielke, a Life of Jazz; and Sal Carson, the Life of a Big Band Leader. Also included are research notes and materials collected that were omitted from his published works or were for books that were never completed.
Physical Location: The collection is stored off-site.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

Publication Rights

All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.

Provenance

This collection was donated by Jim Goggin over the course of 6 years from 2002 through 2008. Accession numbers 2002-43, 2003-14, 2003-28, 2003-52, 2005-2, 2005-96, 2006-85, 2007-17, 2008-27, 2008-46.

Conservation Note

During processing, the entire collection was re-foldered and re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes. Some metal staples remain.

Materials Transferred

A total of 14 issues of Down Beat magazine and 16 issues of Record Changer magazine have been separated from the collection and transferred to the Arts, Music, and Recreation Center at San Francisco Public Library.
Five vinyl records of music by Dude Martin and his Roundup Gang and six records by the Duncan Sisters have been separated from the collection and cataloged with the San Francisco History Center vinyl record holdings.

Biography

Jim (James E.) Goggin was born August 6, 1928 in Alameda, California. He authored many jazz articles and published books about West Coast jazz music and its performers from Bob Mielke to Turk Murphy. He also co-founded the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation, which dedicated itself to the preservation of thousands of items related to the West Coast Jazz Revival that began in San Francisco around 1939. Many of his published books were aimed at highlighting the lives and contributions of the musicians he knew personally, and included figures such as Bob Mielke, Dude Martin, Sal Carlson and Turk Murphy. Jim passed away on April 2, 2018.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of written, visual, and audio materials collected by Jim Goggin during the course of his research for his books on jazz musicians and jazz history. Of note are primary source materials in the form of interview audio recordings on cassette tape with Sal Carson, Ted Johnson, and Edna Fischer Hayes, as well as handwritten transcripts for the Carson interviews. This collection is otherwise predominantly comprised of secondary source materials compiled by Jim Goggin.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in 2 series. Series 1 is further organized into subseries for each published work in order of publication. Series 2 is arranged alphabetically with research for unpublished works placed at the end.
