Biographical / Historical
The Cal Poly Pomona Student Wives Club was established in 1948 at what was formerly known
as the Voorhis School for Boys in San Dimas, California. The school was an extension of the
California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and would eventually become known as
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
The club was created with the purpose that student wives become better acquainted with one
another, host social and recreational activities, and to promote projects as well. The club
was founded by student wife Barbara Marvin who also served as the club's first president in
1948. Membership was only for the wives of Cal Poly Pomona students who at the time were all
male.
The Student Wives Club functioned exactly as any other club did at Cal Poly Pomona even
though the women were not actually enrolled in school. The wives of faculty members
typically filled in the role of advisor for the club. They held meetings, committees, and
elected their governing body members. They also held events such as picnics, dances, fashion
shows, bake sales, dinners, and other activities as well. The club would also bring in
speakers from off campus to speak to the student wives about fashion, cooking, taking care
of their children, and other topics. Additionally, the Student Wives Club also worked on
raising money and donating to different foundations, charities, and scholarships.
The Student Wives Club held an annual ceremony known as Pushing Hubby Through (P.H.T.) for
the first time on June 4, 1957 in the Voorhis Chapel. This ceremony was held to recognize
the wives who's husbands were graduating and student wives received a P.H.T. for helping
their husbands get through college. It is estimated that around 4,100 women received a
P.H.T. diploma. The P.H.T. ceremony was held from 1957 until 1975.
In 1968 the name of the Cal Poly Pomona Student Wives Club was changed to Poly-Annas to
include single women as well as married women who were students attending Cal Poly Pomona.
The club was disbanded in 1975.
