Biography/Administrative History

Thomas J. Barkle was born in Llantriscant, South Wales. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he held several pastorates before arriving in Monterey in 1918, where he became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey. He retired in 1938. In 1936 he established the Monterey Museum and specialized in collecting Robert Louis Stevenson, Civil War, and California historical materials.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection includes three series: Series I includes the photographs of Los Burros Mining District taken by pharmacist Max Fischer in 1889; series II contains card photographs by C. W. J. Johnson documenting a Monterey theater production of George Baker's "Nevada, or the Lost Mine," in 1889; Series III includes miscellaneous card photographs by various photographers showing views of Monterey, buildings, and sites.
