Scope and Content Note

The series II comprises 38 notebooks. Beginning around 1974, Irwin began to read philosophy (Hegel, Marx, Kierkegaard, Einstein, Wittgenstein and others) for ideas with which to defend his art against criticism. The small early notebooks contain excerpts from Irwin's readings with his notes. The larger notebooks contain commentaries on his readings, and the later notebooks are compilations of ancillary information for his own writings. This series also contains a separate notebook used in preparation for his 1977 Whitney Museum project.
