Scope and Content Note

The papers of Augustus Le Plongeon include correspondence, travel diaries, research materials and notes, manuscripts, publications, and personal documents spanning his career from his time in Peru until his death.

Scope and Content Note

The series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and spans the period from his time in Peru until shortly before his death. It comprises letters from a wide range of correspondents including museum directors discussing possible lectures and the disposition of Le Plongeons' collections, letters from other scholars including A. H. Sayce, J. Ralston Skinner, and Alfred P. Maudslay, and letters from readers commenting on his various books. Also included are copies of a few of Le Plongeon's letters, mostly dating to his time in Peru. For additional letters see also: Series II.B: Travel Diary (Alice Dixon Le Plongeon).

Contains circa 116 pages of clippings from Peruvian newspapers regarding religious controversies such as Le Plongeon's public argument with Father Pedro Gual that was stimulated by Le Plongeon's letter to the editor in which he criticized a sermon give by Gual; the case of José Johnson; and the publication of Le Plongeon's La religión de Jesús comprada con las enseñas de la Iglesia. Also, two manuscripts (17 pages), titled "Vision de M.A.L.P. le Dimanche 7 Janvier 1866 au cercle de la M.," and "Deuxieme vision 14 Janvier," are written starting from the back of the book.

Notbooks used from both front and back, creating two distinct sections. One notebook has a hand-written title page "Dr. Aug. Le Plongeon, note book Assyrian antiquities," followed by 14 pages of pencil drawings. Starting from the other side it contains six drawings of Peruvian landscapes; 15 albumen photographs by Le Plongeon of Peruvian sites and pottery; and 16 engravings of Peruvian subjects. The other notebook contains four watercolor drawings and 16 pencil drawings of pages and figures from Mexican codices, followed by a section titled "Antiquties of Yucatan," which contains 20 albumen photographs by Augustus Le Plongeon, mostly of Mexican pottery. Starting from the other side a hand-written title page "Dr. Aug. Le Plongeon, note book" is followed by two pencil drawings related to Peru.

Half-leather ruled notebook, stamped on spine "Records," contains a 263 page manuscript travel diary in English. Pages are numbered 1-263; 2 pages between p. 225-226 are unnumbered. Pages 1-40 are the text of a lecture that Alice delivered in Belize, Honduras, 1878[?] for the benefit of the Catholic School, and subsequently published as her 1878 article "Notes on Yucatan." The diary begins on the next page. Tipped-in letters to Augustus Le Plongeon are from Palomino (p. 238), Peón de Regil (p. 242), and Irmilio Canton (p. 249). A newspaper article by Alice Le Plongeon, "Un sueño de las ruinas de Uxmal," translated from an article in the World (New York), and published in a Mexican paper covers the end papers. The other two albums contain wedding portraits, snapshots of the couple, interior views of their home, portraits of family members, photographs of the Le Plongeons in Yucatan (see Box 7, item 10), and memorabilia.
