Scope and Content Note

Einar Gjerstad’s scholarly reputation was formed by his work on Cyprus as the director of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition. The Swedish Cyprus Expedition, in the field from 1927 to 1931, was an exceptional excavation. The scope of the endeavor was enormous. In those four years, the team excavated approximately twenty sites covering the range of Cypriot civilization from pre-pottery Neolithic to the Late Roman period, including settlements, cemeteries and sanctuaries. The publication of the expedition was also a model, in both the relative speed with which it was produced and in the intellectual caliber of the work.

Gjerstad’s research materials and publications on the archaeology of Cyprus constitute this series, with his publications forming the initial element. Manuscripts of several of Gjerstad’s published articles are included here, along with relevant notes and photographs, as well as Gjerstad's own offprint copies of a small number of his publications. Although the official archive of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition is held by the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm, this collection includes a small amount of material directly related to the Expedition. These are primarily materials such as typescripts by various authors, proofs, and other production materials relating to Gjerstad's role in overseeing the publication of the nine-volume excavation report. A small quantity of correspondence follows, also primarily concerned with Swedish Cyprus Expedition publications. The bulk of the material in this series, however, pertains to Gjerstad’s research. Photographic documentation of artifacts, especially pottery, is included, as well as a collection of offprints relating to various aspects of Cypriot archaeology.

Scope and Content Note

Rome was founded in 753 B.C. This date, derived from the ancient Romans’ own written tradition of their history, has long been accepted by historians. In the volumes of his Early Rome series and in many related articles, however, Einar Gjerstad refuted this established date for the foundation of Rome. Arguing from archaeological evidence as opposed to the literary sources, Gjerstad proposed a radical shift of Rome’s foundation to circa 575 B.C. and the establishment of the Republic from 509 B.C. to circa 450 B.C. Gjerstad's research and publication materials relating to his redating of the early history of Rome comprise this series.

Gjerstad’s work on early Rome had two aspects, the collection of archaeological data and the interpretation of that data, and these two aspects have met with different receptions among scholars. The research materials assembled by Gjerstad for his study of early Rome form the first section of this series. These materials are primarily archaeological with only limited references to the purely historical and cultural aspects of the early city. Gjerstad gathered data from all the pertinent earlier excavations in the Forum Romanum and the surrounding areas, and combined them with the finds from his own excavations. This earlier data had been held by different entities and was often difficult to access. Of particular interest in this regard is the work of Giacomo Boni, who did extensive stratigraphical excavations in the Forum at the turn of the twentieth century. Boni had carefully documented his work through notes, drawings, stratigraphic sections and photographs, but this material had never been fully published. Gjerstad’s compilation of all that scattered data has generally been deemed an important scholarly contribution and is represented here in his research materials, especially in the extensive photographic documentation of the early Roman pottery sequence. As for the conclusions Gjerstad drew from this data, that is, his revision of the chronology of early Rome, these were for the most part vigorously opposed in his lifetime and find only occasional adherents today.

These conclusions, as well as a thorough presentation of his data, are to be found in Gjerstad's many publications on early Rome. The archive includes materials related to many of these publications. The bulk is production materials, especially plate and figure mechanicals for the Early Rome series, but there are also a small number of manuscripts, typescripts and offprints relating to his other publications on Rome.

Scope and Content Note

Although highly focused on the archaeology of Cyprus and early Rome, Gjerstad's research interests also extended into other areas of archaeology. Because Cyprus played the role of cultural intermediary in the eastern Mediterranean, this holds particularly true with regard to Cyprus' neighbors, such as Greece, Turkey and Egypt. This series is comprised of research materials and a small number of publications by Gjerstad relating to these neighboring cultures, as well as more distant ones. Also included here are unidentified archaeological notes, drawings and photographs.
