PETITION ON THE SLEEPY LAGOON CASE TO HONORABLE ROBERT W. KENNY, ATTORNEY GENERAL,
STATE OF CALIFORNIA
WE, the undersigned, interested in the maintenance of our democratic institutions and the eradication of race prejudice, hereby
petition you, the Attorney General of the State of California and the official charged with the responsibility of representing
the State in the Sleepy Lagoon case (People vs. Gus Zamora, et al)—personally to take charge of and thoroughly investigate
this case in order that your office shall not be used as an instrumentality for the support of convictions based upon race
An investigation will reveal that the 12 boys convicted in the Sleepy Lagoon case and now confined in San Quentin prison were
tried during a wave of anti-Mexican hysteria whipped up in Los Angeles, during which an offical report was presented to the
Grand Jury by Ed. Duran Ayres of the Sheriff's office, which in an amazing reproduction of the "logic" of Hitler's race theories,
urges the Grand Jury to consider the "biological" basis for crime in Mexican youth and states that Mexicans have the desire
to use a knife or some lethal weapon and want to kill or at least let blood.
We are confident that an examination of the essential facts of this case will convince you, as one who has always opposed
racial discrimination, that the convictions in this case are indefensible, unsupported by the evidence, and in violation of
the defendants' constitutional rights, and will prompt you to take decisive action to assure a reversal of these judgments.
We, therefore, call upon you to join in requesting the court to set aside the convictions.
