  • - New Charter members - John Denton; we are reviewing responses to mass mailing as other charter members may be included.
  • - Friends mailing to entire mailing list went out on December 8. For total received to date see "Executive Director's Report".
  • - Letters went out to physicians and members of the medical community from Sheldon Berrol, Samuel Caughron, Robert Fink. They requested other physicians to join with them in Friends and to participate in a Medical Advisory Board.
  • - In February, we will be working to get other physicians to write requests that can go out to Alta Bates and Childrens Hospital.
  • - Next mass mailer will go out in Spring, 1976. Size of list will have increased substantially as a result of names from raffle tickets.

  • - Met with Vice Chancellor Kerley who will assist CIL by seeking out lawyer who can work on development of a Charter for the Friends organization. Also will seek out possible participants in a Financial and/or Business Advisory Boards.
  • - Contact with Vincent Francis of ABC continued. He is seeking out legal assistance for CIL. Also is trying to arrange visit to CIL to facilitate more in-depth assistance in fundraising efforts.
  • - PR Advisory Board: Lou Levin sponsored a dinner at Scomas with representatives from Key Magazine and CIL staffers. We discussed advertising techniques in relationship to the Independent. Levin obtained full paged ads for the next two issues of the Independent from ABC. Key will sponsor workshop in brochure-writing for all folks interested from CIL.
  • - Met with Mr. Bob DeBolt and Dean Chapman from the AASK Foundation and discussed the possibility of a joint fundraiser. They were responsive to the request that they utilize their contacts for this fundraising event.
  • - Met with Dee Scalipino, wife of UC professor. Very interested in helping out CIL in the future.

  • -For totals on tickets sold see "Executive Director's Report"
  • -The drawing for prizes will be held on February 3 at West Dakota Club. Entertainment that has been lined up is: Malvina Reynolds, Mark Naftalin, Bay Area Progressive Musicians

    Association, and Barry Melton (club and entertainment has been obtained free of charge). Tickets are selling for $3.50.
  • We anticipate raising at least $500.
  • All Board members are invited to attend.

  • - Have worked with Jack Foley to obtain assistance in raising funds to purchase facility.
  • - Met with Ted Dienstafrey who will work on development of a Facility Fundraising Drive for CIL.

  • -$1,000 received from Clorox for general support
  • -$1,000 contribution from Firemans Fund
  • -Mason-MacDuffie sent representatives to do an on-site visit after receiving request for general support. CIL's request for $2500 [illegible data] received today.
  • -United Airlines is considering a request for $1,000 that will come before their Contributions Committee in March.
  • Bob Sampson, Vice President of United submitted request for CIL, so that there is good possibility CIL will receive a contribution. Sampson will visit CIL in March.
  • -Pacific Telephone is considering CIL's request in January.
  • -Requests to 3 additional corporations submitted in December, but response is still forthcoming.
  • -Submitted request to Bank Of America Foundation for $41,000 toward purchase of the building.
  • -Will submit request to IBM for purchase of building.

7. POLITICAL WORK

  • - Appeared before Albany City Council and submitted request for operational funds. Received $500 (10% of total amount available to services programs).
  • - Appeared before Alameda County Board of Supervisors and submitted request for additional operational support. Received additional $1500 per month for January through March to cover overhead costs.
  • - Community Development funds through the City - have word from City Manager's office that HUD has okayed some portion of the $19,000 for CIL's Housing program.

  • - Submitted request for CIL's Housing Program to CDRS for 77-78 and request for a block grant toward purchase of the facility (total request was $45,000) and appeared before Housing Advisory and Appeals Board.
  • - CIL is on the Consent Agenda for week of Feb. 1 for Berkeley City Council for a loan from the city of $41,000 toward down payment on purchase of facility. City Manager's office is investigating other possible governmental funding sources here and in DC
  • - Work in Oakland - Talked with members of City Council, and the Budget and Management Office, Oakland Citizens Committee for Urban Renewal, and Redevelopment Office. CIL can possibly get funds for 1 housing counselor to provide services in Oakland. Oakland Revenue Sharing goes directly to Oakland General Fund. Funds for social service agencies only available through CAP so we are starting to set up meetings to work on these funds.
  • - Community Services Administration staff are researching government funding sources for purchase of facility. May be possibility of funds through Community Development moneys at State level.
  • - Request submitted to Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) for $40,000 toward operation of expanded transportation system.
    This request will be reviewed either in February or March. MTC staff will approve and recommend request.

8. FOUNDATION SUPPORT

  • - Received $5,000 toward deficit from Crown Zellerbach Foundation.
  • - Received $37,000 from Fleischman Foundation for match to acquire 6 additional vehicles (match is roughly $17,000) and remainder can go toward operation of transportation system in 1977. In the letter attached to the check, stated can request funds toward operation in 78 later this year.
  • - Submitted application for reallocation of renovation moneys toward purchase of facility from Cowell Foundation. Also requested additional funds toward purchase
  • - Met with a Program Officer from Ford Foundation in New York. He will visit us in March. Ford primarily funds educational activities, but we want to establish good relationship and to gain their assistance on foundations to approach.
  • - Will try to meet with Kresge Foundation in New York. Kresge only funds purchase, construction, and renovation of facilities. Will try to submit request to them.
  • - Will submit request to Fleishman for purchase of facility because the foundation will have to liquidate assets by 1980.

9. PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • -Work with Public Media Center: they want to put together entire media package for CIL. PMC will work in conjunction with CL to obtain funding. They are doing radio PSA's for CIL"s paralegal advocacy program free of charge. PMC did award-winning documentaries on farmworkers, and just completed package for CETA in San Francisco. PMC wants to put together 18-20 minute documentary on CIL and disabled movement.

  • -Article about CIL appeared in San Francisco Examiner on 1-28-77.
  • -Judy Heumann appeared on Channel 9 on "Followup of America-1976".
  • -Eric Morton, Phil Chavez, and Phil Draper talked about CIL's services and funding needs on KQED-radio.
  • -Coverage on AC Transit demonstration and issue of wheelchair accessible transit (and CIL's role) covered by:

  • -Working with Arthur Zegart. Producer of ABC's national network program called Directions. Will try to get to Bay Area in February to arrange production of film on CIL.
  • -Have met with National Executive of PBS. Will try to arrange either local or national weekly show on radio or tv from CIL, to focus on disability-related issues. Meeting will be set up with representative from KQED to discuss possible program.
  • -Working to get new PSA on KPIX.
  • -Working with SKYE Productions on doing film story on how disabled people live independently and interact within society. Also will focus on role that CIL plays in facilitating this process.
  • -Public service announcements for radio and tv, and events listings for all Bay Area periodicals submitted for FEb. 3 Benefit Concert.
  • -Article appeared in Social Policy on CIL.
  • -Marisa Anderson, a free lance writer, is submitting article to Human Behavior Magazine on CIL.
  • -Working with writer from California Daily Living to get article on CIL.
  • -Met with Mike Stample from KNBR-radion (NBC). Will do tape to air on KNBR about CIL's services and funding.

10. SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

  • - Spke before Board of Directors of University YWCA
  • - Spke at El Cerrito Womens Club
  • - Three speaking engagements lined up in Feb. and March at social and service clubs.
  • - Letters requesting additional speaking engagements are going out on a continuing basis. All these talks do focus on funding need.
