Abstract:
Includes studio portraits of Robertson, as well as snapshot photographs documenting Robertson and other survivors of the 1913
shipwreck of the State of California; the eruption of Mt. Lassen; the making of Alaskan Adventures and possibly other films;
a 1928 Fox Film expedition to Alaska; indigenous peoples who were subjects of his proposed Robertson Expedition to Central
Asia; miscellaneous travel and hunting photographs; and commercial views of Alaska. Many photographs depict Eskimo and/or
Inuit peoples. Also includes a scrapbook that comprehensively covers Robertson's career in Alaska. Also includes many clippings
and pieces of ephemera pertaining to Robertson's career and adventures; business records pertaining to Robertson Expedition,
Inc. and other projects; miscellaneous correspondence and other personal papers; large maps of Alaska (1923) and Yukon Territory
(1919); and a few historical objects: Explorer's Club of New York flag, scrimshaw handle, and autograph book.

Sophus John Robertson, who came to be known as Captain Jack Robertson, was born in Hayward, Calif. in 1885. He worked as
a wilderness guide and hunter in Alaska and eventually became a documentary filmmaker in the region. A number of his films
enjoyed commercial release. Later in his life he was hired by the University of California and served as director of U.C.
Extension's Motion Picture Production Department. Robertson died in 1966.
