Abstract:

Letters from Benjamin Wingate to his wife Mary, to his sons Charles and Albert, from Mary Wingate to her husband, and from the Wingate children to their father. Included are Benjamin's letters written from New York (prior to departure for California), Panama, San Francisco and Sacramento. In these he comments on the voyage via the Isthmus of Panama, his brief experience as a miner, life in San Francisco, arriving emigrants, 1851 Vigilance Committee, employment as a bookkeeper, the San Francisco fire of 1851, and the Sacramento Valley area. New York letters describe visits to an insane asylum and institute for the blind. Letters from Mary Wingate provide details of home life and local news in Meriden, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. Correspondence between the father and children reveal details of an affectionate family life.
