A bound holograph copy in George Barrell's hand of the journal he kept during four years
of travel on the seas from Frebruary 1824 to May 1828. Fifteen years old at the beginning
of the journey, Barrell recounts the departure of his ship from New York City, his first
crossing of the equator and rounding of Cape Horn, his visit to the Hawaiian Islands, and
his return to the United States. The journal contains descriptions of life aboard ship
and of native peoples Barrell observed during his journey. Laid in the journal is a
holograph map of the Hawaiian Islands on a piece of 5 x 7 in. cardstock.
