Background
California State University Dominguez Hills was established by the legislature of the
state of California in 1960 as a branch of the California State College system to serve
southwest Los Angeles. Its first name, South Bay State College, was chosen to reflect
that orientation. Its first president, Leo F. Cain, was appointed in January, 1962, and
consulting architect and the college planning staff were appointed later that year.
