Historical Note

The College of Engineering at UCLA traces its beginning to a two-year program of instruction instituted in 1919 when the Los Angeles State Normal School was incorporated into the University of California. Students wanting to go beyond this two-year program had to transfer to the Berkeley campus or to other universities until 1941 when the Regents authorized full instruction in engineering on the Los Angeles campus.
In 1944, Llewellyn M. K. Boelter was appointed the first Dean of the College of Engineering. A single undergraduate curriculum has emphasized fundamentals common to all engineers; specialization occurs either in the senior year, during graduate study, or on the job.
C. Martin Duke (b.1917-d.1988) was educated as a civil engineer at the University of California, Berkeley. He later served as a professor of engineering at UCB and UCLA and as the chairman of the Engineering Department and associate dean of the College of Engineering at UCLA. Research interests included earthquake engineering, soil mechanics, and the effects of earthquakes on site structures.

Scope and Content

Record Series 52 contains reports, committee minutes, and correspondence pertaining to the operation of the College of Engineering at UCLA. Predominant subjects include activities of faculty, curriculum design, departmental organization including a master plan study, annual commencement program and dinner, and business of the Engineers Council for Professional Development.
