Series Description

Central Files, 1939-1957

Physical Description: Boxes 1-617 (207 ft.)

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged in alpha-numeric order, according to the Central File filing manual shown in Appendix.
Records consist of administrative, budgetary and research correspondence. Most of the correspondance is between the Ames Engineer-In-Charge and NACA headquarters staff in Washington, D.C. Much of this correspondence includes letters written by Ames staff for the directors signature, or memoranda to file. Some correspondence is between Ames, Langley Field, and the Cleveland Engine Research Laboratory dealing with such research topics as wing de-icing, metallurgical problems, ballistics, equipment specifications, and airframe problems such as duct-rumbling and dive-stress. In addition, there are minutes of meetings of the NACA committees on aerodynamics, aircraft powerplants, aircraft materials and structures, and jet propulsion. Also included are communication with other governmental agencies such as the Navy and Army Air Corps, Civil Service Commision and the Civil Aeronautics Board, as well as private companies such as Chance-Vought and Gruman, with universities, and the general public.

Report Unit Files, 1947-1954

Physical Description: Boxes 1-100 (33 ft.)

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically. In addition, most documents bear a letter code identifying the originating office (see Common Abbreviations in the Ames Records ), as well as the index number of the final published report.
Records consist of materials compiled by the Ames Report Unit for publication of research reports. Most of these are raw materials, peer reviews, and early draft of technical reports prepared by the following branches of Ames' Aeronautical Research Division: Theoretical and Applied Research, Full Scale and Flight Research, High Speed Research, Research Instrumentation, and the Unitary Plan Design Group.

Records of the Ames Unitary Plan Design Group, 1950-1953

Physical Description: Boxes 1-68 (22 ft.)

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged by topic.
Records consist of requisitions, contracts, cost estimates and bids, progress reports, blueprints, construction specifications, memoranda, and correspondence with engineers at Langley and Lewis. The Ames Unitary Plan Design Group was created for national coordination of the unitary plan, so-called because it unified the efforts of aerospace engineers from the NACA, universities, industry, and the military services to build a series of wind tunnels in the transonic and supersonic range. These records begin with the early planning for the unitary wind tunnel system, discuss ways to pare down the plan, and culminate in the preliminary design of the single unitary plan tunnel constructed at Ames. Construction on the Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel began in 1953, and it encompassed an 11-by-11 foot transonic tunnel and two supersonic tunnels of 9-by-7 feet and 8-by-7 feet.

Records of the Research Instrumentation Division, 1941-1956

Physical Description: Boxes 1-6 (2 ft.)

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by item of equipment.
Records consist of requisitions, reports, studies, recommendations and other correspondence relating to test equipment in use, under development or requested for use at Ames. Among the items discussed are altimeters, gyroscopes, film readers, and various types of recorders.
