Background
Eric Berne was born in Montreal May 10, 1910, son of David Hillel and Sara Gordon Berne. His father, a physician, founded the Herzl Dispensary; his mother was a journalist. Berne graduated BA from McGill University in 1931. He received his MD there in 1935. He interned at the Yale Psychiatric Clinic 1936-38, and was a clinical assistant in psychiatry at Mc. Zion Hospital in New York City, 1941-43. During the latter years he was also a student at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute; 1940-43 he was in private practice in New York City and Norwalk, Connecticut. Berne was a member of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, 1943-46, reaching the rank of major.
