Description
This collection contains a selection of legal and financial documents from the firm, Haas Brothers, previously known as Loupe & Haas and H. Levi & Co. Brothers Kalman and Charles Haas, their cousin William Haas, and Leopold and Karl Klau were partners in the grocery business at various times. There are also records from investments made by the Haas', including stock certificates and legal documents from mining, transportation, and utility companies.
Background
Charles and Kalman Haas, who emigrated from Reckendorf, Bavaria to the United States in the 1850s, were the founders, with their cousin William, of a successful grocery business in San Francisco. Profits from the business were invested in the rapidly expanding mining, utility, and transportation sectors of the economy.
