Additional Note

Photographs document state-owned buildings, equipment, structures and activities of state personnel from various agencies. The largest portion of the collection includes images of such facilities as San Quentin and Folsom State Prisons, state parks, Exposition Park (Los Angeles), State Fairgrounds (Sacramento), Exposition Building (San Diego), state hospitals, state colleges, the University of California, special schools, armories, State Capitol and Capitol Park, and the Governor's Mansion. Of special interest is a large group of images documenting the San Francisco Harbor (c.1915-1930) including the Ferry Building, State Belt Railroad, state dredgers and tugboats, piers, warehouses, wood ships, and activities on the waterfront (F3254:59, 271-272).
A smaller portion of the collection is comprised of photos illustrating state agency activities which were collected by the Dept. of Finance for use in legislative budget hearings. This group includes the Dept. of Agriculture's Grain Lab field work and inspection activities; cadets in training at the California Maritime Academy; students and teachers at state colleges; anti-aircraft, tank and artillery training of the California National Guard; registering vehicles at the Dept. of Motor Vehicles; the drafting room at the Div. of Architecture; and, many other state agency activities.

The largest portion of this collection consists of State Fair Official Photographs (1951-1958) documenting commercial, international and county exhibits; dignitaries including Governors Warren (F3722:953) and Knight (F3722:1157-1158, 1169, 1310, 1319-1320); fair buildings; and some events such as entertainment, beauty contests and product demonstrations. A panoramic photo of the old fairgrounds on Stockton Blvd, is included, 1910 (F3722:632).

This series consists of photographs, the great majority of which were given to Governor Warren by members of the press and other news reporting media. A number were also sent to the Governor by private citizens. The photograph file documents a wide variety of Warren activities and is not limited to his gubernatorial years. Many photographs were used for publicity and political purposes and include a copy of Warren's first formal portrait at the age of three months, pictures of his parents, Warren as a young man, in uniform during World War I, as the District Attorney of Alameda County, and as father and family man. The largest number of photographs depict Warren in his varied activities as Governor and includes photos of Warren signing specific legislative measures, delivering addresses, campaigning for election or on the behalf of other candidates (such as Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bx 3, unprocessed), participating in state-sponsored programs and conferences, at dedications, special events, and other activities.

The 16mm film depicts Collier traveling to various rural areas in his district probably to survey the condition of roads and bridges (1940's).

Photographs taken by Special Unit Senator and the Los Angeles Police Department during the course of their investigation and by amateur and professional photographers who were present at the crime scene. Images depict key figures in the investigation; evidence; the crime scene before, during, and after the assassination; investigative activities such as trajectory studies and walk-throughs of the crime scene by officials; and, Kennedy campaign activities. Two groups of photographs, "Case prep. notebook" (Q101-102) and "Complete set of photos taken by the FBI" (Q85), offer a good overview of the investigation. Index included at the beginning of each photograph album and as Appendix F of the RFK finding aid.

Photographs document railroad and street-railroad lines, equipment, yards and stations. Included are Los Angeles street scenes which depict automobiles, trucks, and horse-drawn vehicles.

Although this collection generally focuses more on facilities than on activities, some images of correctional institutions, state hospitals, state colleges and veteran's homes include inmates, patients, students or residents and staff activities.
