ABSTRACT

Account of the voyage (1857-1858) to China and Japan of the U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota by crewman Joseph Vantine. Included are descriptions of shipboard life; visits to China, Japan and India; pirate attacks; and events surrounding the first U.S. visit to Nagasaki associated with the opening of Japan by Perry in 1858. The account is bound in contemporary binding, written in a single hand, and contains approximately 134 pages.
Supplementing the journal are photocopies of several documents pertaining to assignment of Vantine's Navy pension to his widow Susan.

BIOGRAPHY

A sailor in the U.S. Navy andassigned to the U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota. Vantine was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heric service during Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War.
