British author of travel literature. Beginning in 1875, she was governess for the family of the British governor of Fiji,
Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon.
Scope and Content of Collection
Two holograph letters in which Gordon Cumming relates her experiences in the South Pacific. In the 1876 letter written in
Fiji, she describes her stay in Fiji, the comings and goings of various British officials, Sir Arthur Gordon's attempts to
pacify the tribes of the interior of Fiji, and "unpopular" measures imposed by the British government on the residents of
Fiji. The 1878 letter was written primarily during the voyage recounted in her work A LADY'S CRUISE IN A FRENCH MAN-OF-WAR
(1882). In this letter, she relates her journey to Tahiti and then on to San Francisco.
Both letters were originally laid in the Hill copy of Cumming's 1882 work (Hill DU21 .G77 1882).
