Description
Two holograph letters in which Gordon Cumming relates her experiences in the South Pacific. In the 1876 letter written in Fiji, she describes her stay in Fiji, the comings and goings of various British officials, Sir Arthur Gordon's attempts to pacify the tribes of the interior of Fiji, and "unpopular" measures imposed by the British government on the residents of Fiji. The 1878 letter was written primarily during the voyage recounted in her work A LADY'S CRUISE IN A FRENCH MAN-OF-WAR (1882). In this letter, she relates her journey to Tahiti and then on to San Francisco.
