Administrative History
The La Jolla Civic Orchestra was founded in November 1954 by Peter Nicoloff, a violinist with a distinguished career in Europe.
The La Jolla Civic Orchestra Association was incorporated in California on December 4, 1957. The Orchestra's mission was
to advance public knowledge and appreciation of music. Thirteen years later, in 1967, the Orchestra added a permanent chorus
and became the La Jolla Civic Orchestra and Chorus Association.
In 1972, the organization was renamed the La Jolla Civic-University Orchestra and Chorus Association to reflect its association
with the newly-formed Department of Music at the University of California, San Diego. The University helped to increase and
improve both the Orchestra's repertoire and size, providing new rehearsal space as well as new student musicians. The Orchestra,
composed of musicians from the local area, UCSD students and faculty, is funded primarily by membership donations. Administration
is carried out by a board of directors who serve on a volunteer basis. In 1994, the Orchestra's name changed to the La Jolla
Symphony and Chorus Association.
Scope and Content of Collection
The records of the La Jolla Civic-University Orchestra and Chorus Association consist largely of correspondence, financial
records and subject files. The materials are arranged in three series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) SUBJECT FILES and 3) PUBLICATIONS.
The CORRESPONDENCE, arranged chronologically, is primarily to or from various board members and documents the Orchestra's
activities and growth from 1965-1980.
The SUBJECT FILES are arranged alphabetically and include committee records, board meeting agendas and minutes, fund-raising
event materials, membership lists, rosters, and schedules of concerts. Summary information about the Orchestra's past repertoires
and programs is located in the "Histories of the orchestra" file.
The PUBLICATIONS series is also arranged alphabetically and thereunder chronologically. This series contains printed announcements,
fliers, posters, and programs for concerts, as well as invitations and galley proofs. Also included are scattered issues
of THE SOUNDING BOARD, the Orchestra's newsletter.
