This series is organized in two subseries: pre-war correspondence 1924-1936, and post-war correspondence 1943-1966.

Physical Description: ca. 250 letters

Scope and Content Note

Most of the letters are address to Renger-Patzsch, dating from 1924 to 1936, the time when Renger-Patzsch was working as a freelance photographer in Bad Harzburg and Essen and as instructor at the Folkwangschule in Essen. Included are primarily professional and business letters to Albert Renger-Patzsch from publishers, editors of photographic journals, literary authors, art critics, artists and other photographers. A few unidentified items are filed at the end of Box 1. The letters offer insight into the aesthetic appreciation of Renger-Patzsch's photographic work, and especially the reception of his book Die Welt is schön. Included is the unedited version of Thomas Mann's review of Die Welt is schön. The letters also provide information about Renger-Patzsch's participation in various photography exhibitions held in Germany and abroad. Also present is correspondence with various art schools, including the Folkwangschule in Essen and the Staatliche Bauhochschule Weimar, concerning offers of employment for Renger-Patzsch. Nearly half of the letters are typed.

Scope and Content Note

This portion of the archive dates from 1943 to 1966. During most of this time (from 1944 on), Renger-Patzsch lived with his wife Agnes and daughter Sabine in Wamel, near Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia. The majority of items are typescripts, or carbon copies of typescripts. Letters by Renger-Patzsch are predominantly carbon copies. The container list mentions substantial annotations, editing, sketches and other marks.

Unidentified post-war correspondence is filed in Box 15, F. 6. The post-war correspondence details Renger-Patzsch's professional life and provides insight into his views on photography as an art form, and on commercial photography in post-war Germany. The letters give information on the industrial, architectural and landscape photographs taken by Renger-Patzsch after the war and the reprinting and republishing of his salvaged pre-war work. They also offer insight into the production of his various publications and exhibitions and his lecturing activities.

A major part of this section comprises business correspondence with numerous industrial firms, publishing houses and cultural organizations. Over 530 items constitute correspondence with the chemical concern C. H. Boehringer Sohn in Ingelheim, which between 1946 and 1966 commissioned and financed several of Renger-Patzsch's privately printed books. Other industrial firms significantly represented in the archive are Schubert & Salzer in Ingolstadt; Deutsche Spinnereimaschinenbau AG in Ingolstadt; Jenaer Glaswerk Schott & Gen. [later renamed Schott Glaswerke, filed under Schott, Erich]; Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke; Deutsche Spiegelglas A.G.; Werkstätten J. Dickerhoff in Bochum; Th. Goldschmidt AG in Essen; Knoll International in Stuttgart; Presswerk AG in Essen; and Riedel & Co. in Bielefeld.

Among the individual correspondents are editors, scholars, art historians, architects, and other photographers. Of particular interest is the correspondence (ca. 74 items) with the German-born British photographer, collector and photographic historian Helmut Gernsheim, with whom Renger-Patzsch exchanges opinions about current trends in photography, especially commercial photography, and discusses the relationship between photography and art. Another significant portion represents the correspondence with the German art historian Carl Georg Heise. Heise's letters detail his own editing and writing activities, and include critical reviews of Renger-Patzsch's photographic work, book projects and writings. Also rich in intellectual discussions on photography, art and other cultural topics is the correspondence with the architect Karl Freckmann, the photographer and writer Ernst Fuhrmann, the Austrian art historian and photographer Viktor Fürst, the ecologist Hugo Hertwig, the German-American photographer and art dealer Lotte Jacobi, Ilsemarie von Scheven (book dealer in Hamm and literary critic), the architect Rudolf Schwarz, Käthe Smith (wife of Ronald Gregor Smith, a theology professor in Glasgow ), the photographer Dieter Steffen, and the German philologist Peter Wapnewski.

One topic frequently addressed by Renger-Patzsch in these letters is his appreciation of Hugo Erfurth's portrait photography. Renger-Patzsch frequently writes about his efforts to find a publisher for a book about Erfurth. His correspondence with editors of publishing houses, especially the Insel-Verlag and the Hans Peters Verlag, shows the changing market for photography books in Germany during the 1950s and 1960s.

The post-war correspondence also details Renger-Patzsch's involvement as a board member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie, an association of professional photographers. Letters between Renger-Patzsch and Fritz L. Gruber, Helmut Gernsheim, Carl Georg Heise, and the publisher of Foto Prisma, Wilhelm Schöppe, provide insight into the process of nominating the candidate for the association's annual culture prize, and reveal Renger-Patzsch's opinios about the work of other contemporary photographers, especially Bill Brandt, August Sander, and Otto Steinert.

They discuss their current projects and the relationship between photography and painting. In his letter from Dec. 1, 1958, Gernsheim relates photographs by R.P. , Helmar Lerski and Erna Lendvai-Dircksen to New Objectivity, and mentions in this context his own books New photo vision, Beautiful London and Masterpieces of Victorian photography, and Karl Blossfeld's Urformen der Kunst. Of particular interest is R.P.'s letter from Dec. 6, 1958, in which he describes his concept of atmosphere in photography as a formal expression [" ... Stimmung eine Funktion der Form .."] and writes about his book Im Wald [1945]. In his letter from Jan. 14, 1959, R.P. mentions the two 1928 editions of Die Welt ist schön. Both discuss their concepts of photography, comment on current trends in photography, especially in commercial photography in Germany; and exchange their opinions about candidates for the annual culture prize of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie, especially Otto Steinert, August Sander and L. Fritz Gruber. In his letter from Jan. 1, 1961, Gernsheim relates the work of the American photographer Paul Strand to New Objectivity. Gernsheim's letters frequently concern his failed attempts to establish a museum of photography in Cologne, and involvement with documentary television programs. In his letter from Jan. 20, 1960, Gernsheim comments on the current political situation and on anti-Semitism in Germany. Several letters concern Gernsheim's offer to acquire R.P.'s photographic estate, including all negatives, and to integrate it with the Gernsheim collection in Austin, Texas. Tümpel's letter from Aug. 11, 1949 provides insight into his workshop. Several letters are annotated by R.P. or include sketches of lamps, jewelry and other objects in Tümpel's or R.P.'s hand. With a mention of the furniture manufacturer Josef Dickerhoff. R.P. mentions a joint exhibition with Frida Schoy and the jewelry designer and goldsmith Elisabeth Treskow at the Kunstverein Münster in 1955 (opened Oct. 16th). Tümpel mentions exhibitions of his work in Osnabrück, Schwäbisch-Gmünd and in Hagen in 1958.

R.P. expresses his opinion about modern art, especially Willy Baumeister, and the impact of advertising [Werbung] on photography as an art form and as a profession. Scope and Content Note

The first subseries comprises the business correspondence of Renger-Patzsch's widow Agnes Renger-Patzsch and his son Ernst Renger-Patzsch with various organizations, industrial firms, editors, and friends. The letters provide information about the range of professional activities relating to Albert Renger-Patzsch which took place after his death, mainly the reprinting of his photographs, several exhibitions of his work, lectures, and press articles.
