Series Description

Series I: Personal

Scope and Content Note

Herrmann's personal papers include clippings, concert programs, financial records and correspondence. The correspondence relates primarily to his work for CBS and for film scoring projects.

Series III: Photographs

Scope and Content Note

Photographs including publicity photos, personal photos and studio photos of scoring sessions. The majority, but not all photos have been scanned and thumnails are available online.

Series III: Music Scores

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains original manuscripts for nearly all of Herrmann's film (but not radio) scores and all of his concert music. There are some sketches and in some cases parts that were prepared for recording projects. The scores are arranged alphabetically by title and include references to the Library of Congress microfilm reel and item numbers. A detailed list of the film cues can be found in appendix A. A complete guide to the Library of Congress microfilm is in appendix B.

Series IV: Sound Recordings

Scope and Content Note

The approximately 700 sound recordings are divides in 9 subseries: CBS Radio Recordings, (organized by program and date); Film Music; Television and Radio Music; Concert Music; TransWorld Recorded Library; Commercial Recordings Projects; Lectures and Interviews; Miscellaneous Recordings with Herrmann conducting and Miscellaneous and Unidentified recordings.
The majority of the sound recordings are acetates of Herrmann conducting the CBS symphony from the late 1930s through the 1940s, including him conducting his own works. Recordings of his film music include commercial recording projects he did, but generally not the original recordings of cues from the films. There are also recordings of his concert music, lectures and other recordings that were in his possession at the time of his death.
