Biographical/Historical Note
Charles M. Kurtz (1855-1909) was the director of the Albright Gallery
and Buffalo Arts Academy from 1905-1909. He was also an art critic, collector,
and art director of the St. Louis Exposition of 1894 and of other art fairs and
expositions.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Charles M. Kurtz papers document his prominent role as an arts
administrator, patron and promoter of the arts in the United States during the
late 19th and early 20th centuries, and include letters, manuscripts, notebooks
and printed ephemera. The collection contains ca. 340 letters which discuss
exhibitions, sales of art, patronage, atelier visits, and submissions to
publications, and include letters to his parents in which he discusses the art
market and art world news. Manuscripts, notebooks, a diary and printed ephemera
relate to exhibitions and publications, and date between 1873-1910.

Scope and Content Note
Series I contains correspondence from prominent figures in the
late 19th century and early 20th century art world, arranged alphabetically.
These letters pertain to Kurtz's role as the director of a gallery and art
academy and discuss exhibitions, the sale of works, patronage, atelier visits,
and submissions to "Academy Notes" and "Illustrated Art Notes."
Correspondents include William Merritt Chase (1 letter, 1908),
Frederick Stuart Church (3 letters and 2 sketches, 1904, undated), Thomas
Eakins (3 letters, 1882, 1884), Charles Lanman (3 letters, 1883) and James D.
Smillie (3 letters, 1882, 1884), the German artists Hans Hermann and Franz
Skarabina (1 letter, 1906), the Scottish artists Edward Atkinson Hornel (1
letter, 1906) and William Kennedy (12 letters, 1903-1908), the director of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, Luigi Palma di Cesnola (9 letters, 1882-83,
undated), and the director of the American Art Union, Enoch Wood Perry (19
letters, 1883, undated). In 20 letters to his parents Julia Maria and Davis
Brooks Kurtz (1881-1905), Kurtz discusses speculation in the art market, New
York art dealers, patrons such as Jay Gould, planning of exhibitions, and the
growth Kansas City. Also included are 19 letters ordering the Crabbe sale
catalogue (1890) and 37 letters from various correspondents to Enoch Wood Perry
regarding their nominations to the American Art Union (1883).

Scope and Content Note
Series II contains 3 short manuscripts and typescripts, including
an article criticizing "L'Art Nouveau" (4 pp., undated). The ca. 200 ephemeral
items consist of gallery catalogues, exhibit and social invitations, material
pertaining to the American Union of Art, business cards, press clippings,
images cut from publications, and material from the Glasgow School and School
of Denmark exhibits organized by Kurtz. The notebooks kept by Kurtz are a diary
(1908), 4 address books, an exhibition notebook, and a curatorial notebook from
the Southern Exposition, Louisville KY, 1885, which contains lists of artists
and 25 sketches of gallery plans (1885). Also included is one published sale
catalogue of Kurtz's art collection (1910).
