Biography
Russell C. McGee(1881-1974), a Stockton city engineer and City Manager, attended schools
in the North Bay Area and worked at various surveying and engineering jobs in Marin
County, San Joaquin County and other regions in northern California, before accepting an
engineer's job with the City of Stockton (1914). By 1922 he was first assistant to City
Engineer, Walter B. Hogan. He advanced from Office Engineer to Assistant City Engineer to
Assistant City Manager and ended his career with a two year term as City Manager
(1951-1953). McGee retired December 31, 1953. Clair Horton married Russell McGee in 1922.
Mrs. McGee was stenographer and bookkeeper for the offices of Commissioner O'Keefe,
Stockton City Electrician. She was an active member of the Caliz de Oro Parlor of the
Native Daughters and the Alpha Omega Birthday Club. The McGees had two children, Frances
Marie McGee Atwood (b.1923) and Russell Charles McGee, Jr. (b.1926). Frances McGee
married Burton J. Atwood (1947). Russell Charles McGee, Jr. served as a cryptographer
during World War II. He later graduated in Physics from the University of California
(after 1948).
Scope and Content
The McGee Collection contains: family scrapbooks (1915-1952); family expense ledgers
(1946-1971); and, numerous diaries, including: Clair Horton McGee's 1920 diary of a trip
east to visit family; and, the 21 retirement years diaries of Russell C.
McGee(1954-1972). During those years McGee and his wife traveled throughout the western
states. Other family materials include: Clair's social notes; family correspondence
(1890-1946); memorabilia (1922-1974); and, photographs (1890-1970). The collection also
contains: Russell McGee's business correspondence (1950-1953)and newspaper clippings
concerning the City of Stockton (1948-1953).
