Biography
William Otis Raiguel was born in Freehold, New Jersey on September 25, 1875. In 1905, he traveled to England, France, and
Italy. In 1911, Raiguel traveled from San Francisco to Portland, Seattle, and Canada. After taking the train across Canada,
he visited Pennsylvania and New York and then boarded a ship for Europe. From July 18 to the middle of December, Raiguel traveled
in England, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, and Egypt.
William Raiguel was a member of John Galen Howard's office, and assisted in preparing plans for some of the buildings on the
University of California, Berkeley campus. The buildings he collaborated on include Boalt Hall, Wheeler Hall, Sather Gate,
and the Campanile on the Berkeley campus, and the First Congregational Church in Oakland. In 1926 he retired to his home in
Monterey, California . He died in 1941.
Scope and Content
The William Otis Raiguel papers span the years 1905-1932 and include correspondence, contractual agreements, travel diaries,
and an insurance application. The correspondence, dated from 1909-1920, is between Raiguel and John Galen Howard, and documents
some of their financial arrangements. The three travel diaries completed on his trip to England, France, and Italy include
sketches of architectural plans, buildings, and architectural details. The diary from his later trip around the United States,
Canada, and Europe contains small photographs, itineraries, and a few articles and brochures.
The collection was donated in 1947.
