Description
This collection is comprised of five letters (three in German, two in English) written by Jacob, Koppel, (uncle) Abraham (?), Charles, and Kalman Haas. The correspondence concerns business and family matters and was written from New York, San Francisco, and Reckendorf. William (Wolf) Haas' German travel and immigration documents and Fanny and Koppel Haas' yahrzeit calendar complete the collection.
Background
Fanny and Koppel Haas, the latter a weaver from Reckendorf, Bavaria, had four sons and three daughters. By 1863, the boys, Jacob, Sam, Abraham, and William had emigrated to the United States, joining their older cousins, Charles, Samuel, and Kalman Haas, in establishing a grocery business on the newly expanding west coast. The Haas sisters, Sophie, Sara, and Jetta, their parents, and their uncle Abraham remained in Germany. The Haas brothers and cousins became prominent business entrepreneurs in Los Angeles and San Francisco after a period in Portland, Oregon, and Aberdeen, Mississippi.
