Description
The Allen Papers include correspondence, manuscripts of lectures, conferences and feature articles, and subject files documenting the career and life of biologist W.E. Allen. The collection largely documents Allen's professional life, but it does include Allen's bibliography, a small amount of biographical information on Allen and his wife, Grace Wheeler Allen, and folders documenting Allen's avocation, golf. These folders include early material documenting the Del Mar golf course and the La Jolla Country Club.
Background
Winfred Emory Allen was born June 6, 1873, in West Newton, Indiana, to Joseph Allen, Jr., and Esther Wilson Allen. As part of his Quaker upbringing, he attended Earlham College and was graduated with a Bachelor of Letters (B.L.) degree in 1898.
