Background

Scope and content:

The transcipts in this collection are arranged into two groups. They are titled "Papeles de Lancaster-Jones" and "Papeles del Padre Fischer" and are described in Herbert E. Bolton's Guide to the Materials for United States History in the Archives of Mexico. Many are letters between José de Gálvez, Junípero Serra, Francisco Palou, and the Guardián of the Colegio de San Fernando concerning the establishment of missions and the assignment of missionaries in the Californias.

Some of the transcipts are stamped "Bolton Collection," but had been integrated into the Bancroft Library transcript collection long before Professor Bolton's death.

The folder numbers should be used in requesting these documents, as well as the archival citations.
