Muybridge came to the U.S. in the early 1850s and opened a bookstore in San Francisco in 1855. After being seriously injured in a fall
from a stagecoach, he returned to England, where he turned to photography. He came back to San Francisco in the late 1860s
and did photographic work for the U.S Coast and Geodetic Survey.
