The Affiliates is a non-profit association of alumni, faculty, and community friends of UCLA. It was formed in 1937 by Mrs.
Edward A. Dickson and Countess Frederic Thorne-Rider when the Gold Shield alumnae association abandoned its support of a faculty
lecture series for women in the community.
Regular meetings have been held featuring the University's most distinguished speakers chosen from a wide variety of scholarly
disclipines. Several special events are offered each year: a membership tea, luncheon and dinner programs, and a dinner honoring
UCLA's Fulbright Scholars. In addtion, the year is highlighted with a special gathering honoring the recipients of The Affiliates'
scholarship.
Since 1948, The Affiliates has supported the UCLA Alumni Association Scholarship Program from its own endowed funds, as well
as from the ongoing contributions of members. One such fund was endowed in 1975 by Hortense Fishbaugh, a former president
of The Affiliates. The organization now awards over $40,000 dollars annually to undergraduate and community college transfer
students, as well as to students in the Graduate Division and in the professional schools of Law, Medicine, Dentistry, and
Fine Arts.
Record Series 222 contains publicity announcements and programs for events sponsored by The Affiliates of UCLA. Records also
include newspaper clippings of Affiliate activities.
This is an active record series; additional University records are expected to be added.
